I bet you never wondered what your small business can learn from the frill-necked lizard. The frill-necked Lizards isn’t exactly known for his entrepreneurial skills, but he did get one thing right: He knows how to change perceptions.  By flaring the skin around his neck, he transforms from an underdeveloped and unthreatening snack into a startling badass of pure intimidation.

So what are some ways a small business with a tight budget can seem bigger than it is? One way is to choose the right medium. Another way to seem big is with local sponsorship. Your business’s name associated with a local school or club sports program, for instance, generally appears with fewer ads or sponsorships competing for attention, so you’re a bigger fish because the pond is smaller. More important, you’re supporting the community, and that goodwill naturally predisposes prospective customers to give your business a shot.

Speaking of the community, word-of-mouth can be invaluable. Neighbors routinely ask one another for recommendations via community mail lists or services like Nextdoor.com where members support local businesses. Many are strictly community boards with rules about advertising, so read the terms of service and don’t post flagrant ads if that’s prohibited. But as a general rule it makes sense to let your new and existing customers know that if they’re happy with your product of service, they should mention it to friends. (A few lines of your invoice or receipt can be all it takes) This practice helps build the bond between you and your new customer while attracting new ones and building name recognition.
