In 2011 Google launched Google+, its own social networking platform designed to integrate many of the search engine giant’s own social media marketing tools and other services. Adding a Google+ page for a business helps with search engine optimization, helping company websites appear higher in search engine rankings.

Google+ Circles

Google+ allows users to categorize people into groups known as Circles. Companies can develop groups (or Circles) that consist of clients, potential clients, employees, colleagues and more. In addition, people can be included in more than one circle, which is why this feature is one of the more important social media marketing tools available through this platform. One suggestion is to create a circle of customers and connections that are brand advocates who are loyal to the company, making sure to comment and share their posts for added exposure among their circle as well.

Post Publicly

When posting to Google+ as part of a small business marketing campaign, make sure all posts are public so that the search engines will easily find them. This creates an expanded audience and can bring more visitors to the company website. Be sure to interact with others as well. The faster connections are built, the more the audience will increase. Share posts not only from those within the circles, but also from others that are posted publicly. Be sure to credit the person who created the original post. The Google+ logo is another great social media marketing tool if it is included on websites, marketing material and in advertisements.

Engage the Audience

As with other social media marketing tools, consider how the post will benefit the audience. Calls to action or questions are excellent Google+ posts, and can help improve the success of small business marketing programs. In addition, since Google+ is integrated with YouTube—another social media site owned by Google—adding video to posts attracts followers. Videos can explain how to use a product, provide background on staff, or explain an industry trend.
